  • Introduction/Foreword: Throughout recorded history, one period stands above the others as the most significant technological advancements. While it would be common to assume that this was the invention of the iPhone or similarly recent device, we are going to take a look at the life-changing time that was the early 1800s in our unit on the Industrial Revolution.
  • Task: In this lesson you will be exploring several of the technologies that came about as a result of the Industrial Revolution. It will be your job to analyze how the creation of that technology would impact a society that previously did not benefit from it. For example, a technology introduction in our modern society of digital cameras integrated into many handheld devices has broadened the reach of photography and brought it out of a hobby or profession and into the hands of the masses. Your end product may be created in a program you choose (Word, PowerPoint, Podcast, Video, etc...) but must contain descriptions, analysis and more than one media type for 3 inventions.
  • Resources: You are free to search for resources to help you complete your WebQuest. I would start with the video listed in step 1 of the process and move on from there but here are some other sites to look at:
  • Process:
    • Please begin the lesson by viewing this video previewing the "big idea" of the Industrial Revolution: Industrial Revolution
    •  After watching the video, please complete a WebQuest to learn more about 3 or more of the following technologies developed during the Industrial Revolution:
      • Cotton Gin
      • Spinning Jenny
      • Internal combustion engine
      • Phonograph
      • Steam Engine
      • Flying Shuttle
      • Lightning Rod
      • Spinning Mule
      • Telegraph
      • Sewing Machine
        • There are many more to choose from!
    • After picking 3, your job will be creating a report detailing how the invention worked (roughly), what the purpose of the invention was and how it would have affected everyday life for 1800s society.
     Rubric:
    •  Conclusion: Now that you have a better understanding of the types of technologies brought about by the Industrial Revolution, do you agree that this is the most significant change in human history in regards to technology? Please write 3-4 sentences in your journal explaining why you agree or disagree with this opinion.

    Hello and Welcome!

Mr. Melville here! I am excited and honored to begin our scholastic journey together. As you are aware, this class is Modern World History. This year we will investigate patterns and themes throughout European and Western history with an emphasis on gaining a better understanding of the human experience. While I realize that there are some of you that may have found history to be a dry subject in the past, I look forward to surprising you with how entertaining many of the units can be. If there is a part of history that appeals to you more than others, let me know ASAP and I will do what I can to work that into an upcoming lesson. Please take a moment to review the syllabus as it contains important information regarding policies, due dates and classroom expectations.

As we proceed through the year, we will learn about more about each other. Allow me to give you a head start on knowing me by telling you a little about myself. I am a San Diego native and graduate of San Diego State University and National University. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from SDSU, a Single-Subject Credential in Social Studies and am in the process of receiving my Master's Degree in Education with a specialization in Learning Technologies from NU. This is my first year teaching and I couldn't be more excited to get in the classroom! I am a fan of the San Diego Chargers and (as you will see in class) a fan of bad jokes of all kinds. I have a wife, Stephanie, and a puppy named Max.

Let's make this school year a great one!

    ~Mr. Melville
